Money in the 1830s
Prices were fairly steady. The decade saw the first passenger railway between Liverpool and Manchester (1830), the Great Reform Act (1832) and the accession of Queen Victoria (1837).
Prices rose about 10% between 1830 and 1839. These figures compare the cost of everyday goods and services. Wages, house prices and the size of the economy all grew at different rates, so a 1830s salary or fortune would look bigger still if compared with what people earn or own today.
